How to speed up Google indexing

Did you know that when you publish a blog post, it’s not immediately searchable on Google?

It can take several days or more for your pages to become findable on Google. Who wants to wait that long? Not me.

This post covers 2 methods to make Google indexing faster.

Read on to find out how you can get your content indexed in just a few hours.

Introduction

Although you can’t get your new content indexed in Google immediately, you can take action to speed things up. That means your stuff becomes findable faster.

My content usually appears in Google’s index within a few hours.

Follow the methods below and you’ll get the same results.

This is especially valuable for time-sensitive content. Get this sort of content indexed quickly and you have a good chance of gobbling up more than your fair share of web traffic.

While you’re waiting for the Google index to update, get busy with promoting the content on social media and to your mailing list. People won’t know your content is there unless you tell them.

Remember that speeding up indexing isn’t the same as improving your ranking. To do that you need to write good material that others are happy to share and link to.

Method 1: Google Search Console

Google Search Console is a free online tool that lets website owners view info about their sites’ performance. There are also a couple of options for changing how things works, and one of those is the feature we’re looking at here.

Links shared via Google Search Console appear in Google search results in a few hours.

Get started with Google Search Console by logging in with your Google account. Then follow Google’s steps to link your site to Google Search Console.

Once that’s done, you’re ready to speed up indexing of your newly published content. Here’s how:

  1. In Google Search Console, click Crawl and then Fetch As Google.

  1. Enter the address of the page to be indexed.
  2. Click Fetch And Render.

A reference to the page appears at the bottom of the screen, with a progress symbol. After a minute or so, a Request Indexing button appears.

  1. Click Request Indexing.

A popup window then appears.

  1. Tick the box to confirm you’re not a robot.
  2. Click Crawl only this URL.
  3. Click Go.

After a few hours, the new page should appear in Google’s search index.

Test this by doing one of the following:

  • Search for the exact headline of the page.
  • (Preferred) Use the site: search filter to look for your domain and the file name of the page.

Pros and cons of the Google Search Console method

  • The quickest way to get new content indexed.
  • Works well for re-indexing updated content.
  • Initial setup may be a pain.
  • Needs to be done separately to social scheduling.
  • Works only on sites you control.

On balance, I prefer this method rather than the one that follows.

Update: I used the method on this post on the day of publication (20 June 2018). The content was indexed in under 3 hours.

Method 2: Google+

Google+ is a rubbish social network but it’s still useful for getting your content indexed quickly.

Links shared via Google+ appear in Google search results in 1–2 days.

You need to sign up for Google+ before you can post anything. It’s free and pretty quick to get started, especially if you don’t plan to use the platform for anything else.

Don’t worry about filling out reams of profile info – the bare basics are enough for the following method to work.

Once you’ve created a Google+ account, you can post to it either directly or via a social-scheduling tool such as Buffer or Hootsuite.

The direct route is simplest. Make your post short and to the point. Remember that we’re doing this to help the content be indexed more quickly – it’s not about reaching an audience on Google+:

I use Buffer to post to Google+, which means I never have to visit the Google+ site.

Again, I’m not bothered about reading other people’s posts there – I’m concerned only with speeding up Google’s indexing of my blog posts.

Pros and cons of the Google+ method

  • Easier to add to your workflow, especially if you use a social-scheduling tool, e.g. Buffer or Hootsuite.
  • Works well for content posted on a domain you don’t control, e.g. for guest blog posts or articles on LinkedIn and Medium.
  • Indexing is slower than the Google Search Console method.
  • You need to set up a Google+ account.

This is the method I used to use before discovering the Google Search Console method. It’s still useful for speeding up indexing of guest blog posts and other content on sites you don’t directly control.

Whenever you post articles, blogs or any other content on the web, don’t wait for Google to index it. Follow one of the methods above and jump ahead of the queue.

While you’re waiting for your content to appear in Google’s index, don’t forget to promote via social media and your mailing list.
