It might be a style guide, a client brief or a general crib sheet. I don&#8217;t like to interrupt my stream of thought too much, so it&#8217;s important to me that such files are easily accessible. That&#8217;s certainly a useful way to speed up your work, and if you haven&#8217;t tried it yet you really ought to.<\/p>\n<p>But this method allows you to make quick links only to <em>folders<\/em>. What if you want to do the same thing with <em>files<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s the secret<\/strong>: the toolbar running along the top of the window is capable of displaying shortcuts to both files and folders. But, unlike the sidebar, items can&#8217;t be added to the toolbar at the top of the window simply by dragging them there.<\/p>\n<h2>Adding a toolbar shortcut<\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to add a file or folder to the toolbar at the top of a Finder window:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the Finder window containing the file or folder you want.<\/li>\n<li>Hold down the <code>Cmd<\/code>+<code>Alt<\/code> keys.<\/li>\n<li>Drag the file or folder to a blank part of the top toolbar.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That&#8217;s all there is to it. You can now access the file or folder from any Finder window. As we&#8217;re just creating a shortcut, the original file isn&#8217;t moved or changed in any way.<\/p>\n<h2>Renaming a toolbar shortcut<\/h2>\n<p>One of my biggest annoyances with shortcuts in the left-hand sidebar is that they can&#8217;t be renamed without the original folder also being renamed. As ever, there is a way to get around this, though it&#8217;s not particularly elegant.<\/p>\n<p>All we need to do is to create an alias to the file or folder, rename it appropriately and then place it in the top toolbar, again using the <code>Cmd<\/code>+<code>Alt<\/code> trick above.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2293\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2293\" style=\"width: 256px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2293 space lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/espirian.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/secret-toolbar2.png\" alt=\"Making an alias\" width=\"256\" height=\"241\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 256px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 256\/241;\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2293 space\" src=\"https:\/\/espirian.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/secret-toolbar2.png\" alt=\"Making an alias\" width=\"256\" height=\"241\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2293\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Making an alias<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"fullwidth space\">\n<h3>Bonus tip: about aliases<\/h3>\n<p>In macOS, an alias is the term for a file that acts as a pointer to another file. (Windows users usually call them &#8216;shortcuts&#8217;.)<\/p>\n<p>To create an alias, <code>Ctrl-click<\/code> a file and click <strong>Make Alias<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You can rename an alias and move it almost anywhere \u2013 usually to the desktop \u2013 without affecting anything about the original file.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Removing a toolbar shortcut<\/h2>\n<p>To remove a shortcut from the top toolbar, simply hold down the <code>Cmd<\/code>+<code>Alt<\/code> keys again and then drag the shortcut icon out of the window. It will vanish with a pleasing puff.
