Compare to and compare with

Use compare to for likening one thing to another. For example:

  • He’s good. The pundits compare him to Messi.

Use compare with when assessing things against each other. For example:

  • Which fuel is better? Let’s compare petrol with diesel.

In most cases, compare with is the right choice.
